I was having problems with my cable company and electrician with separate locations outside the home. We've lost a lot of electronics over the years due to lightning and improper grounding. Using a fiber optic break between the power and cable eliminates the possibility of lightning propagating from the cable company and striking back to earth through the electronics. I've been using these fiber optic converters for about a decade now and have had no further damage from power surges. Note that even an aerator outlet won't protect you if your electric company and your cable or phone company aren't connected to the same ground pin outside your home.
